Overview
This document provides guidance for the effective hunting of wild ruminants in a manner that respects species-specific and animal welfare requirements. It contains recommendations for hunting seasons based on scientific and practical knowledge with regard to wildlife biology, wildlife ecology, the impact of wildlife - thus lessening damage - as well as nature conservation and animal welfare. Three biological phenomena in the annual cycle of native wild ruminants determine the guidelines in the formulation of this document: a) the winter reduction in metabolism (physiological hibernation); b) the deficit in energy reserves in the spring; and c) the calving season (birth) of young animals in the spring and early summer. These three sensitive phases in the annual cycle, along with the rearing period (lactation and nursing) of young animals which, however, varies significantly among species form the essential basis for uniform establishment of hunting and closed seasons for wild ruminants, based on wildlife biology and ecology as well as animal welfare considerations. This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 057-06-01 AA "Jagd" ("Hunting") at DIN Standards Committee Food and Agricultural Products (NAL).
