Smart City
Standardization for urban innovations
Population growth, environmental pollution, and resource scarcity pose challenges to Cities and communities around the globe. One solution approach is Smart Cities, or rather smart, connected and sustainable municipalities that use connected technologies to make urban processes more efficient and sustainable.
Standards and specifications play a crucial role in integrating smart technologies safely and effectively thereby creating sustainable, more liveable environments in line with the New Leipzig Charta.
What defines a Smart City?
A smart city is an urban environment that uses digital and integrated information and communication systems to continuously improve its efficiency and sustainability. It integrates social and technical innovations, using the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensors, among other things, to achieve ecological and social goals.
Smart Cities are more than technologically advanced; they bring together citizens, businesses, politics and administration in a cooperative approach to urban development. By promoting smart economy, smart governace, and smart living, the quality of urban life is comprehensively improved and the foundation for an inclusive, forward-looking future is laid.
Standardization: Key to a successful Smart City integration
Standards and specifications are essential for the successful implementation of smart cities. They ensure that digital solutions function securely and effectively – for example, by:
- using a common reference architecture for open urban platforms (DIN SPEC 91357)
- standardization of impact measurement for climate protection measures (DIN SPEC 91637)
- specifying the use of digital twins (DIN SPEC 91607)
These specifications and other standards enable cities to develop connected and innovative systems.
Standards and specifications in the field of Smart City are developed by the DIN and DKE standards committees Smart Cities (DIN NA 043-02-03 AA), Sustainable development in communities (DIN NA 172-00-12 AA) and Electrotechnical Aspects of Smart Cities (DKE/K 201), or in the case of DIN SPECs in temporary consortia.
The DIN/DKE Smart City Standards Forum (SCSF) is a central information and networking platform, designed to jointly identify areas of activity and to support the digital transformation of cities, communities, and regions by initiating new standardization projects.
