The main goal of European standardization is to unify all standards that apply within Europe. This removes most national technical barriers to trade, thus facilitating export. Companies can make and test products and perform services according to European Standards – making it possible to market them throughout Europe without any restrictions. Because they remove barriers to trade, European Standards are an important pillar of the European Internal Market. They also help improve consumer protection, environmental protection and occupational health & safety.

DIN is the gateway to European standardization for German stakeholders, as it is the official representative of German interests in CEN, the European Committee for Standardization. Today, roughly 85 % of all national standards projects are European or international in origin.
