Coolants for internal combustion engines - Test methods - Part 3: Direct determination of element contents from additives and impurities by optical emission spectral analysis with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES)
Kühlmittel für Verbrennungsmotoren - Prüfverfahren - Teil 3: Direkte Bestimmung der Elementgehalte aus Additiven und Verunreinigungen durch optische Emissionsspektralanalyse mit induktiv gekoppeltem Plasma (ICP OES)
Overview
This document specifies a test method for determining the elements listed in unused and used coolants, which can originate from the additive content, from abrasion or from impurities. This particularly includes the elements: calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, potassium, iron, silicon, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, copper, phosphorus, sulfur, strontium, boron, aluminium, lead and chromium. The determination is applicable for all coolants. The determination is performed by means of optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES). This test is recommended as the preferred method when a large number of elements present in the concentration ranges listed in Table 1 are to be determined simultaneously in a coolant. Higher and lower concentrations can be measured by adjusting the dilution ratio. This document has been prepared by Working Group NA 062-06-63-01 AK "Kühlmittel für Verbrennungsmotoren - Prüfmethoden" ("Combustion engine coolants - analytical methods") of Working Committee NA 062-06-63 AA "Gebrauchtöluntersuchung" ("Analysis of used oils" at Technical Committee "Mineralöl- und Brennstoffnormung (FAM)" ("Standardization of mineral oils and combustible materials") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
