Method for Measuring Hydrogen Permeation from the Gas Phase into Metals and for Determining the Barrier Effect of Layers on Metallic Substrates

Abstract

This document specifies a laboratory method for measuring the effective hydrogen diffusion and permeation coefficients through metallic membranes and for determining the barrier effect of coatings on metals. This document applies to metals and alloys in which both hydrogen loading and permeate detection are performed via the gas phase. This document specifies requirements for the preparation of specimens, the control and monitoring of environmental variables, the test procedures, and the evaluation of results. This document for determining barrier performance is, in principle, applicable to all types of coatings and surface treatments, provided they remain thermally stable under the test conditions used. Within the scope of this standard, the coating is intended to be applied only on the loading side.
