Pyrogenic Carbonaceous Materials – Specification and classes for material use – Part 1: General requirements

Abstract

This document specifies the permitted starting materials for the production of pyrogenic carbon materials for material use in various application areas, the specifications and the analytical methods to be used. The material applications of the materials include, for example, direct carbon storage, applications with long-term carbon storage and short-term material uses. Primary biomass as well as biogenic residues and by-products, which can be of plant, animal or microbial origin, can be used as starting materials. These source materials can contain organic, including fossil, and/or inorganic contaminants or impurities. Maximum permissible contents are defined for the individual areas of application. This document does not apply to fossil carbons or carbonized biomass such as peat. Substances from the hydrothermal conversion or torrefaction of biomass are also not within the scope of this standard due to the excessively high H/Corg ratios of > 0,7 of these materials.
