Cosmetics - Analytical methods - Determination of barium, nickel and other elements in cosmetics and tattoo products by atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) after pressure digestion

Abstract

This document specifies a method for the determination of antimony, barium, lead, cadmium and nickel in cosmetic and tattoo products by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) after pressure digestion. This method was validated in a ring trial according to ISO 5725-2 using lipstick, tattoo paint, body lotion, toothpaste, eye shadow and water-based make-up with barium in the range 8,51 to 65,15 mg/kg and nickel in the range 4,51 to 27,33 mg/kg. Antimony was analyzed in body lotion with 13,32 mg/kg, lead in body lotion with 17,10 mg/kg and cadmium in lipstick with 0.885 mg/kg and in body lotion with 4,15 mg/kg.
