Strut systems for fire and rescue service use - Safety and performance requirements

Abstract

This document specifies safety and performance requirements for strut systems manufactured after the date of publication. This document is applicable to strut systems which are intended for use by the fire and rescue services, principally for non-permanent stabilizing, lifting, shoring, supporting and providing an anchor point. The aim of strut systems is to assist the fire and rescue services while extracting the casualties or to create a safe working space for rescue services taking the local conditions into account. Strut systems consist of struts and the necessary system components (e.g. base, energy source, drive system) and intended accessories (e.g. extension, chain, strap), as defined in Clause 3. A fully integrated strut is considered as a strut system. This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events relevant to the machinery, when it is used as intended and under conditions or misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This document does not include: - Double acting hydraulic strut systems (refer to EN13204 for rams); - Hydraulic shoring systems for groundwork support according to EN4653-1; - Adjustable telescopic steel props according to EN1065 which are single acting (for example spring/gravity return jacks, powered struts, etc.); - Mobile or movable jacks and associated lifting equipment according to EN 1494. It is not applicable to additional requirements for: a) operation in severe conditions (e.g. extreme environmental conditions such as temperatures outside the range -20 °C and +55 °C, corrosive environment, tropical environment, contaminating environments, strong magnetic fields, potentially explosive atmospheres, underwater use); b) the risk directly arising from the means provided for the portability, transportability, mobility and decommissioning of strut systems during periods of their operation; NOTE 1 EN 13204:2025 deals with powered rescue tools for fire and rescue services. And EN 13731:2007 deals with lifting bag systems for fire and rescue services. NOTE 2 For the EU/EEA other Directives can be applicable to the equipment in the scope, for example the Electro Magnetic Compatibility Directive or Radio Equipment Directive.
