German Space Standardization activities in the European and International Framework

Space activities are not anymore a symbol for competition of technology and political systems, Space applications are today essential tools for economy, science, politics and society. New applications and markets have more and more to face short product cycles, with frequent market introduction of innovation. Standardization is a tool to support the introduction of innovation for products and to access global markets. In particular Space-based new markets are on the way to be established, however the general framework of standards and legal regulations for these new markets are only partially available. Standards give clarity regarding future markets as a basis for investment for both the private and public sectors. Standards give sustainability for development and innovational potential.

Due to the fact that new markets emerge and new market fields interact (systems, services, products), global standards and active implementation of them are the cornerstone to define market access, market niches and proactively drive market and application interaction.

Aerospace is affected by international cooperation and strongly controlled by national and international regulations and standards in order to ensure safety, reliability, and cost-efficiency. Within the German Space Program, global competitiveness of the European industry is referred to with maximum priority among other aspects in the field of industrial policy. The cooperate preparation of standardized procedures by the European Space Industry and Space Agencies supports this objective.

Harmonizing these standards and standardization activities has to be organized in favor of a competitive involvement of the German Industry and research concerning space activities.

This presentation shall illustrate the different standardization activities in the space area on national, European and international level and shall give an overview about the harmonization approaches of the different standard development organizations.
