Overview

This document specifies methods for the determination of the density or relative density of crude petroleum and of petroleum products handled as liquids. The capillary-stoppered pyknometer method can be used for solids and coal tar products. This method is not suitable for highly volatile liquids having Reid vapour pressures greater than 50 kPa (0,5 bar) according to ISO 3007 or having an initial boiling point below 40 °C. The bicapillary pycnometer method is suitable for all products except those with high viscosity and especially for small sample quantities. The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 062-06-84 AA "Gemeinschaftsausschuss NA 062-06-42 AA/NA 062-06-61 AA" ("Joint working group NA 062-06-42 AA/NA 062-06-61 AA") of Technical Committee Mineralöl- und Brennstoffnormung (FAM) (Standardization Committee for petroleum, fuels, lubricants and related products (FAM)) at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
