Corrosion of metals and alloys - Comparative account of accelerated corrosion test methods and of their suitability for different fields of application and corrosion protection systems
Abstract
This document is applicable for the selection of suitable accelerated climatic tests to assess the effect of corrosion protection for metallic materials. From the specifics of the test climates of various standardized accelerated corrosion tests, guidance for the development of test specifications can be derived at the same time. In this document, the following points are considered: (a) the different categories of accelerated corrosion behavior climatic tests; b) recommended areas of application for the different types of tests and their suitability; (c) corrosion exposure to the particular test and relative corrosion rates of commonly used metallic materials of construction; d) requirements for test equipment, criteria for reproducibility; e) possible correlation with use under service conditions; f) recommended procedure for product qualification. The main purpose of this document is to compare different internationally standardized procedures for accelerated corrosion testing. The selection of a test method depends on the corrosion protection requirements resulting from the intended use of the product. The accelerated corrosion tests listed in this document alone are not suitable for evaluating the durability of products under operational conditions of use.
