DIN EN 779
Particulate air filters for general ventilation - Determination of the filtration performance; German version EN 779:2012

Title (German)

Partikel-Luftfilter für die allgemeine Raumlufttechnik - Bestimmung der Filterleistung; Deutsche Fassung EN 779:2012

Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, the manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard refers to particulate air filters for general ventilation. These filters are classified according to their performance as measured in this test procedure. This European Standard contains requirements to be met by particulate air filters. It describes testing methods and the test rig for measuring filter performance. In order to obtain results for comparison and classification purposes, particulate air filters shall be tested against two synthetic aerosols, a fine aerosol for measurement of filtration efficiency as a function of particle size within a particle size range 0,2 µm to 3,0 µm, and a coarse aerosol for obtaining information about test dust capacity and, in the case of coarse filters, filtration efficiency with respect to coarse loading dust (arrestance). This European Standard applies to air filters that are to be tested at an air flow rate between 0,24 m3/s (850 m3/h) and 1,5 m3/s (5 400 m3/h) and which have an initial efficiency (with fine aerosols) of less than 98 % with respect to 0,4 µm particles. The performance results obtained in accordance with this standard cannot by themselves be quantitatively applied to predict performance in service with regard to efficiency and lifetime. Other factors influencing performance to be taken into account are described in Annex A (informative). This standard contains the German version of EN 779:2012, which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 195 "Air filters for general air cleaning" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 779:2003: a) new filter group M (medium filter) with the filter classes M5 and M6 which replace the previous filter classes F5 and F6; b) the classification system for F7 to F9 has been changed by introducing a minimum efficiency level. The criteria for the average efficiency and the minimum efficiency shall be fulfilled in order to achieve the filter class; c) aerosol neutralization has been dropped; d) the test method for discharging of filter material formerly specified in Annex A (EN 779:2003 and prEN 779:2009) has been transferred to the normative part of the standard; e) the procedure described in clause 11 is only based on a standardized treatment with isopropanol (IPA). The procedure has been described in detail by definition of the immersion time of material samples, description of repeat measurements and IPA purity; f) the test report has been supplemented by a summary of the results; g) the standard has been editorially revised and normative references have been updated. The national interests during the preparation were represented by NA 060-09-21 AA "Luftfilter" ("Air filters") in the Technical Section General Ventilation of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of interested parties, including manufacturers of particulate air filters, users and research and testing institutes were involved in the preparation of the standard.
