DIN 14854
Firefighting and fire protection - Plank ramp

Title (German)

Feuerwehrwesen - Auffahrbohle

Overview

Plank ramps are used to increase the stability of vehicles on soft ground and to bridge gaps and height differences. Furthermore, plank on ramps are sometimes also used to distribute the load when using lifting bags. The previous February 1975 edition of DIN 14854 has been revised in order to increase the load-bearing capacity of the plank ramps. These shall now be able to bear a load of at least 6 000 kg applied centrally to an area of 650 cm2 without damage, whereby the plank ramp rests 200 mm to the left and right of the end of the ramp over its entire width, leaving the middle of the ramp exposed. The load of 6 000 kg (equivalent to 58,86 kN) results from the maximum permissible single axle load of 10 t of an unpowered axle according to German Road Traffic Regulations (StVZO), that is 5 t per axle half plus a safety factor of 1,2, so that the single axle loads on the drive side are also covered with their maximum permissible 11, 5 t according to the StVZO. The surface area of 650 cm2 corresponds approximately to the tyre contact area of a 285/70 R 19,5 tyre.
