Cloud Federation

Cloud-based systems and services are increasingly being used in products related to mechanical engineering and by manufacturers of components. This trend brings with it an increasing demand – from various companies – for the data of devices such as machinery and components, so that additional services such as predictive maintenance can be offered and improved upon. Many bodies of machinery consist of components made by different manufacturers. In certain circumstances, these manufacturers already offer their own cloud-based services.

The objective of the planned DIN SPEC 92222 “Reference Model for Industrial Cloud Federation” is to ensure the interoperability and communication between those IT subsystems involved and physical devices.

In the process, the communication of machines (so-called edge-components) with the cloud of the manufacturing company is considered, as well as communication between companies with other cloud systems. Activities related to this DIN SPEC will focus exclusively on applications from Industrie 4.0, i. e. manufacturing, production and mechanical engineering. Concrete use cases given by the workshop participants provide the starting point for defining general solution concepts. These are validated in collaboration with the Cloud2Cloud testbed of Labs Network Industrie 4.0 (LNI 4.0), thus enabling the results of the tests to be channelled straight back into the standardization project. This procedure is an initial example for this agile standards approach – one that allows for the practice-oriented preparation of concrete action recommendations.

The kick-off workshop for DIN SPEC 92222 took place on 09.03.2018 at the Mittelstand 4.0- Kompetenzzentrum (SME 4.0 centre of expertise) in Augsburg, Germany. The initiator and workshop leader was Christoph Legat, from Assystem Germany GmbH.
