Overview
This standard applies to liquid-filled magnetic compasses and binnacles for navigation and steering purposes with or without gimbals and for azimuth reading devices. It applies for ships and lifeboats/rescue boats fitted with such a magnetic compass. It contains performance requirements and specifications regarding construction. The standard also specifies requirements for product documentation, such as type test certificate, individual test certificate and manufacturer certificate. Furthermore, it contains requirements for the local positioning of magnetic compasses on the ships as well as specifications for the testing and approval of magnetic compasses with or without gimbals and azimuth reading devices. ISO 25862:2009-05, first edition, replaces ISO 449:1997, ISO 613:2000, ISO 694:2000, ISO 2269:1992 and ISO 10316:1990.
