Language resources and language technology - Derived text formats (DTF)

Abstract

This document applies to the classification and standardized description of methods and procedures for creating derived text formats from natural-language text documents. These derived text formats are generated through the enrichment and targeted reduction of information. This document specifies how derived text formats can be categorized and described. This description can be used to specify, in specific application contexts involving derived text formats, which formats were used, what their limitations and capabilities are, and how the transformations were performed. Even though the digitization of printed texts initially involves creating images of the texts (photos of book pages, scans of documents), this document considers texts only when they are available in a digital text format; therefore, this document does not apply to other types of text representations, such as photographs of texts. By contrast, the output of an OCR recognition of an image of text—for example, as part of a digitization workflow beginning with a scan as a bitmap image, in which text is then recognized as a character string—is a digital text and can serve as the basis for derived text formats. The legal question of whether these derived text formats affect rights to the original text is not addressed in this document. Rather, this document provides guidelines for the creation of derived text formats suitable for specific analytical purposes and tools, and defines terms related to the creation and use of derived text formats.
