Overview

DIN EN ISO 16089 has been prepared by ISO/TC 39/SC 10/WG 2 and is based on DIN EN 13218. Thus a standard successful at the European level is now also valid worldwide. DIN EN ISO 16089 specifies safety requirements and protective measures for manually operated grinding machines without power-operated axes and without numerical control, for manually operated grinding machines with power-operated axes and limited numerical control capability and for grinding machines with numerical control. It deals with the relevant significant hazards and also with those devices that are integral to the grinding machine, such as clamping devices and so on. DIN EN ISO 16089 does not apply to honing, polishing and belt grinding machines. It applies to machines manufactured after the date of issue of this standard. By implementing a decision of ISO/TC 39/SC 10, modes of safe operation have been introduced, including Mode of Safe Operation (MSO) 3, optional special mode for manual intervention under restricted operating conditions, with a separate selection device and specific safety measures, and introduction of a new informative Annex with examples.
