Overview

This standard defines terms for microlens arrays, which are arrays of very small lenses formed inside or on one or more surfaces of a common substrate. The aim of this standard is to improve the compatibility and interchangeability of lens arrays from different suppliers and to enhance the development of technology using microlens arrays. Microoptics and microlens arrays are found in many modern optical devices. They are used as coupling optics for detector arrays, and the digital camera is an example of a mass-market application. They are used to enhance the optical performance of liquid crystal displays (LCD), to couple arrays of light sources, and to shape illumination in screens of 2D and 3D TV sets, cell phones, and portable computers, for example. Microlens arrays are used in wavefront sensors in optical metrology and astronomy, as light-field sensors in 3D photography and microscopy, and in devices for optical parallel processing. With the growing market for microlens arrays, it has become necessary to reach agreement on the basic terms and on the definition of microlens arrays themselves. This standard attempts to meet that need. The committee responsible for this standard is Working Committee NA 027-01-18 AA "Laser und elektro-optische Systeme" ("Laser and electro-optical systems") at DIN.
