Overview
This document DIN SPEC 58193 provides a list of critical chemical substances possibly contained in spectacles and sunglasses as well as in their components and accessories. This document applies to all types of spectables and sunglasses. The document describes the critical chemical substances, the risks that may be associated with them, the materials in which they may be present, and the test method(s) available for their quantification. The document does not contain requirements. It is up to the user of this document to determine the level acceptable to the user; for example, a specific concentration, detection limit or quantification limit. Manufacturers, importers and downstream users have a responsibility to ensure that their products provide a high level of protection for human health and the environment. According to the REACH Regulation, those responsible for the supply chain have a legal obligation to ensure the safe use of products by placing them on the market. This DIN SPEC 58193 has been prepared to provide guidance and information on potential chemicals in products. Since chemicals used in the production process are usually only known to the manufacturer, this document does not claim to be complete or up-to-date with regard to the chemicals used. It is intended to support the user in considering possible and critical ingredients in terms of their risks. This document has been prepared by Working Group NA 027-01-08-08 AK "Brillenfassungen" ("Spectacle frames") in Working Committee "Augenoptik" ("Ophthalmic optics") at DIN Standards Committee Optics and Precision Mechanics (NAFuO).
