Method for the assessment of the potential fire load of plastics and fibre‑reinforced composites using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
Abstract
This document specifies a method for the determination of characteristic parameters used to assess the potential fire load of plastics and fibre‑reinforced composite materials. The parameters obtained allow different materials to be compared with each other and qualitatively evaluated. The method is applicable to solid filled and unfilled plastics as well as fibre‑reinforced plastics and composite materials. In addition to the mass loss of the specimen, the DSC signal with the associated heat flow is evaluated, the course of which may provide indications of possible fire‑related properties.
In addition to the use of air as the analysis gas described below, corresponding to a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen in a ratio of 80:20, the use of gas controllers allows different atmospheres to be established in the measurement cell and, consequently, different fire scenarios and regimes to be simulated.
