Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes - Secondary sealed cells and batteries for portable applications - Part 1: Nickel-cadmium (IEC 61951-1:2017 + AMD1:2023); German version EN 61951-1:2017 + A1:2023
Overview
This part of IEC 61951 specifies marking, designation, dimensions, tests and requirements for portable sealed nickel-cadmium small prismatic, cylindrical and button rechargeable single cells, suitable for use in any orientation. The document includes electrical tests, mechanical tests, safety requirements, and requirements for type approval. The scope of the document is limited to portable applications. The standard differs from DIN EN 61951-1 (VDE 0510-53):2017-12 as follows: a) battery type has been added; b) revision of Figure 3 (6.1.3.1); c) Note "optional bump" added to the positive contact; d) reference line moved from the bump to the surface of the positive contact (B and G). Unlike NiMH and lithium based secondary cells, NiCd cells have a high level of robustness against deep discharge and overcharge. Unlike NiMH and lithium-based accumulators, NiCd cells are characterized by significantly higher resistance to deep discharge and overcharging. Both properties are particularly important in many safety-critical applications, meaning that lithium or NiMH accumulators are not a suitable replacement in many cases.
