Overview

Powerful electric traction drives are also being used more and more frequently on small watercraft under 24 m hull length. IEC 60092-501 applies to traction drives for watercraft with a hull length of more than 24 m. A separate, new standard is therefore required for smaller watercraft (for example, recreational craft). The standards introduced for electrical systems on small watercraft, ISO 10133 and ISO 13297, apply only to system voltages up to DC 50 V and less than AC 250 V, respectively. Especially for electrical propulsion systems, emerging technologies are used with system voltages higher than allowed by the two aforementioned ISO standards for small watercraft. This standard contains a compilation of the essential safety requirements from the applicable national and international standards concerning voltages and frequencies that are higher than the values specified above. Higher system voltages increase the risk in terms of danger to persons and equipment. This risk should be reduced by application of this standard. It also contains recommendations for the design, construction and installation of electrical equipment and components used in electrical drive systems with higher voltages. This standard has been prepared by a joint working group of ISO/TC 188 "Small craft" and IEC/TC 18 "Electrical installations of ships and of mobile and fixed offshore units". The German mirror committee is NA 132-03-12 AA "Podded drives".
