How DIN Contributes Globally
International collaboration is a key focus of DIN’s work. For over three decades, DIN has implemented projects in developing and emerging countries, aimed at building and strengthening local standardization organizations.
Here are some examples that illustrate the diversity and impact of these efforts.
Standardization Roadmap for Circular Economy in Latin America (2025–2026)
How can circular economy concepts be effectively integrated into international standardization? A planned project in Colombia, Mexico, and Peru (2025–2026) focuses on developing methodologies and frameworks for standardization roadmaps tailored to the circular economy. A study trip to DIN in February 2026 allowed participants to explore German approaches to standardization. Moving forward, the project partners will build on these foundations, creating and publishing country-specific roadmaps.
Reform and Capacity Building in Uzbekistan (since 2023)
Since 2023, DIN has been collaborating with the Uzbek Standardization Institute UzSti. The project encompasses advisory tasks related to organizing standardization institutions, managing technical standards committees, and improving collaboration with private-sector stakeholders. A mix of on-site sessions and virtual training sessions has supported knowledge transfer in areas such as Germany’s standardization strategy and international cooperation. Long-term goals include quality assurance, digital tools integration, and enhanced participation in international standardization platforms.
Twinning Project in Namibia (2022–2024)
In Namibia, DIN was part of a German-Swedish consortium supporting the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI). The project aimed at aligning national standards with international ones while also addressing trade barriers. A close partnership with the Namibian Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade (MIT), alongside targeted training programs, ensured the establishment of long-lasting sustainable structures.
Standardization Information System for South Asia (2019)
In collaboration with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), DIN developed a standardization information system for the South Asian regional standardization organization SARSO in 2019. This tool helps provide businesses in the region with easier access to relevant standards, ensuring greater transparency and fostering regional trade development.
Twinning Project in Ukraine (2018)
In 2018, a significant EU Twinning Project was launched to support the economic alignment between Ukraine and the European Union. Together with standardization organizations from Austria, Spain, and Romania, DIN assisted the Ukrainian Standardization Institute (UAS) in adapting its structures and processes to European and international standards. Tailored advisory measures enabled fundamental reforms, facilitating trade and promoting economic growth.
Sustainability and Economic Development in Rwanda (2018)
How can standards enhance quality of life? A project in Rwanda provides a concrete answer. On behalf of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), DIN supported the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) in developing standards for public-use furniture, such as school equipment. These new standards not only simplify procurement processes but also promote sustainable quality improvements in the local market.
International projects like these strengthen standardization institutions and promote global knowledge exchange. They are fundamental to ensuring harmonized, forward-looking standards worldwide. By participating in such initiatives, stakeholders actively contribute to creating frameworks that facilitate trade, sustainability, and international collaboration.
