Die 71. Plenarsitzung von CEN/TC 256 „Railway Applications“ fand am 19./20.05.2026 in Lissabon, Portugal, statt und brachte Expertinnen und Experten aus ganz Europa und darüber hinaus in einer sehr kooperativen und freundlichen Atmosphäre zusammen.

Ein besonderer Dank gilt den Gastgebern und Organisatoren, Eduardo Correia und Francisco Sécio, die die Teilnehmenden im Instituto Português da Qualidade (IPQ), der nationalen Normungsorganisation Portugals und Institution für Metrologie und Qualität, herzlich empfangen haben. Ihre hervorragende Organisation und Gastfreundschaft haben wesentlich zur positiven Stimmung der Veranstaltung beigetragen.

Während der Sitzung fanden konstruktive Diskussionen zur laufenden Normungsarbeit statt, wobei das hohe Aktivitätsniveau in allen Subkomitees und Arbeitsgruppen deutlich wurde. Fortschritte wurden unter anderem bei der Umsetzung des Normungsmandats M/591, bei Migrationsstrategien zwischen EN- und ISO-Normen sowie bei der weiteren Abstimmung mit europäischen und internationalen Partnern berichtet.

Hervorzuheben ist insbesondere der ausgeprägte Geist der Zusammenarbeit und gegenseitigen Unterstützung, der die gesamte Veranstaltung prägte. Das Treffen zeigte nicht nur die fachliche Stärke des Komitees, sondern auch den besonderen Zusammenhalt innerhalb der Gemeinschaft.

Ein ganz besonderer Moment der Plenarsitzung war die herzliche Verabschiedung von Cliff Cork, der seine langjährige Tätigkeit als Chair von CEN/TC 256 beendete. Sein außergewöhnliches Engagement, seine Expertise und seine Führung haben die Arbeit des Komitees über viele Jahre maßgeblich geprägt. Für seine herausragenden Leistungen wurde ihm große Anerkennung ausgesprochen und ein Zertifikat, sowie ein Fotobuch, das einige Highlights seiner Amtszeit fotografisch festhält, überreicht.

Gleichzeitig begrüßte das Komitee Neil Dinmore als neuen Chair von CEN/TC 256. Er eröffnete die Sitzung in seiner neuen Rolle und wird das Komitee künftig führen.

Die Sitzung wurde mit Dank an alle Teilnehmenden für ihre wertvollen Beiträge und die weiterhin enge Zusammenarbeit geschlossen. Die nächste Plenarsitzung findet virtuell am 24./25.11.2026 statt.

CEN/TC 256 Plenary Meeting in Lisbon – A Strong Community and a Significant Transition

The 71st plenary meeting of CEN/TC 256 “Railway Applications” took place on 2026-05-19-20, in Lisbon, Portugal, bringing together experts from across Europe and beyond in a highly collaborative and friendly atmosphere.

Special thanks go to the hosts and organizers, Eduardo Correia and Francisco Sécio, who warmly welcomed the participants at the Instituto Português da Qualidade (IPQ)—Portugal’s national standards body and institution for metrology and quality. Their excellent organization and hospitality contributed significantly to the positive spirit of the event.

During the meeting, fruitful discussions were held on ongoing standardization work, clearly demonstrating the high level of activity across all subcommittees and working groups. Updates were provided on several key areas, including the implementation of Standardization Mandate M/591, migration strategies for EN and ISO standards, and ongoing efforts to strengthen alignment with European and international partners.

A particular highlight was the strong spirit of collaboration and mutual support that permeated the entire event. The meeting not only demonstrated the committee’s technical expertise but also the exceptional cohesion within the community.

A very special moment of the plenary session was the warm farewell to Cliff Cork, who concluded his long-standing role as Chair of CEN/TC 256. His exceptional dedication, expertise, and leadership have significantly shaped the work of the committee over many years. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was presented with a certificate. He also received a commemorative photo book highlighting key moments from his tenure.

The committee welcomed Neil Dinmore as the new Chair of CEN/TC 256. He opened the meeting in his new role and will lead the committee going forward.

The meeting concluded with sincere thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions and their continued close collaboration. The next plenary meeting is scheduled to take place virtually on November 24–25, 2026.
