Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates - Part 1: Determination of particle size distribution - Sieving method; German version EN 933-1:2025

Abstract

This document specifies the reference method used for type testing and in case of dispute, for determination of the particle size distribution of aggregates, by washing and dry sieving. The reference method is not applicable to aggregates sensitive either to pre-drying or washing. Other methods can be used for other purposes, such as factory production control, provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established. This document applies to all aggregates, with an upper aggregate size D up to 90 mm, but excluding filler aggregates. NOTE The determination of the grading of filler aggregates is specified in EN 933-10 [1]. The wet sieving procedure conforming to this standard can be used as an alternative method. However, it is not applicable for mixed filler. Annex A specifies the procedure for the preparation of the test portion of aggregates unsuited for heating above ambient temperature. Annex B specifies alternative preparation of the test portion of crushed all-in aggregates with D ≥ 31,5 mm for unbound bases and subbases. Annex C specifies a test method for water sensitive aggregates. Annex D specifies a test method for manual sieving of railway ballast with particles greater than 22,4 mm. Annex E provides guidance for maximum mass retained on various sieves to avoid overloading. Annex F provides an example of test data sheet. Annex G provides a sheet for graphical presentation of test results. Annex H provides precision data for fine and coarse aggregates, regarding the cumulative mass percent passing a sieve. Annex I provides an A-deviation to fulfil occupational health requirements in Sweden. Annexes A and C are normative and Annexes B, D, E, F, G, H and I are informative.
