Standards and specifications support the necessary digitalization of agriculture and bolster trust in smart farming.

Standards and specifications related to smart farming ensure clear communication between all those involved in the food value chain - from the farmer to the end customer - and increase the social acceptance of products as well as the associated economic efficiency.

Here is a selection of various standards from different sectors relevant to smart farming.

Documentation and agricultural management systems

Geographic information - Data quality Show

DIN EN ISO 19157 “Geographic information - Data quality” defines a concept for describing the quality of geographic data as well as the framework for quality assurance of production processes. This is intended for formal description of the quality of geographic data in order to assess the usability of the data in any application. This standard also includes guidance on how this quality data can be described, analyzed and delivered.

Overview of Smart Farming based on networks Show

ITU-T Y.4450 provides a general overview of applications of smart farming systems based on the networking of different databases.

Agricultural machinery

Agricultural engineering - Electrical and electronic equipment Show

ISO 15003 provides design requirements and guidance for manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment for use in all kinds of mobile agricultural machinery. It includes tests for specific environmental conditions and defines severity levels for tests that relate to the environmental extremes that can be experienced in practical operation of the equipment.

Test methods for track guidance for tractors and agricultural and forestry machinery Show

The ISO 12188 series of standards “Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Test procedures for positioning and guidance systems in agriculture” provides the basis for testing the positioning and guidance systems of agriculture and forestry machines. In addition, this series includes requirements on testing of satellite-based auto-guidance systems during straight and level travel.

Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Serial control and communications data network Show

The ISO 11783 series of standards specifies a serial data network for the control and communication of forestry or agricultural tractors and towed or self-propelled equipment. The objective is to standardize the method and format of data transmission between sensors, actuators, control units and data storage and display units, regardless of whether these elements are mounted on the tractor or on the equipment.

Food value chain

Food safety management systems Show

DIN EN ISO 22000 identifies what an organization must do to ensure its ability to control food safety hazards. This series of standards specifies requirements for the implementation and maintenance of a food safety management system (FSMS) which cover the fundamental conditions and activities needed to ensure hygiene and safety in the food chain.

Sustainable and traceable cocoa Show

The ISO 34101 series of standards specifies high-level requirements for management systems for sustainable cocoa bean production, including post-harvest processes, if applicable, and traceability of the sustainably produced cocoa beans within the organization producing the cocoa beans.

Traceability in the feed and food chain Show

DIN EN ISO 22005 specifies general principles and basic requirements for system design and implementation.  This standard helps farmers to implement a feed and food traceability system and to ensure the traceability of the flow of materials (feed, food, ingredients and packaging).

Crop production

Agri-photovoltaic systems - Requirements for primary agricultural use Show

DIN SPEC 91434 specifies requirements for primary agricultural use in the field of agri-photovoltaics (APV). It defines requirements for the planning, operation, documentation and operational monitoring of agri-photovoltaic systems. Further, it specifies measurable performance indicators for test methods for the quality assurance of agri-photovoltaic systems.

Quality management system for crop production Show

Pest management services Show

DIN EN 16636 specifies the requirements for pest management services and competences to be met by professional providers of pest management services in order to protect public health, assets and the environment.

Animal husbandry

Milking robots Show

DIN ISO 20966 specifies requirements for the construction of automatic milking installations (AMI), including specific safety and hygiene aspects and minimum performance requirements and testing.

Radio frequency identification of animals Show

The ISO 24631 series of standards describes the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders for the individual identification of animals. It sets forth the conditions for the granting and use of the manufacturer code related to a transponder and the associated rights and obligations of the parties involved in the issuance of the code.

Animal welfare management Show

ISO/TS 34700 “Animal welfare management - General requirements and guidance for organizations in the food supply chain” was developed in order to support the food and feed industry in establishing an animal welfare plan which ensures the welfare of animals raised for food or feed production in livestock systems.

Environmentally relevant parameters

Drones Show

The ISO 21384 series of standards describes the field of unmanned aerial spraying systems within agricultural and forestry machinery. This supports the development of safe and effective drones for agricultural use.

Environmental management Show

ISO 14055-1 “Environmental management - Guidelines for establishing good practices for combatting land degradation and desertification - Part 1: Good practices framework” is still under preparation. It provides guidance on how to implement good practices to reduce land degradation and provides orientation on how to restore land that has been degraded.

Processing

Self-service via milk dispensers Show

DIN 10541 defines hygienic and technical requirements that lay the foundation for placing fresh milk on the market for self-service via milk dispensers in compliance with food hygiene regulations.

Quality management system for crop production Show

DIN ISO 22006 provides guidelines for the application of ISO 9001 to crop production. This standard gives guidelines to assist crop producing farm operations in the adoption of ISO 9001 for crop production processes. The guidance given is applicable to both large and small operations and provides a framework for good management practice.
