Paper and Board - Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs - Determination of Fluorine by Combustion Ion Exchange Chromatography

Abstract

This European Standard deals with the determination of Fluorine in paper or board, and in the raw materials and process additives thereof. A general method for Fluorine determination is described for solid or liquid samples by hyphenated Combustion Ion-Exchange Chromatography (CIC). For samples free of Fluorine, a range of 0.01 to 0.5 mg/l (ca. 0.5 to 30 mg/kg) shall be used. For samples containing Fluorinated compounds, a range of 0.5 to 20 mg/l (ca. 30 to 1200 mg/kg) shall be considered and sample weight adjusted as needed prior to combustion. Guidelines for the determination/estimation of Total Fluorine, Inorganic Fluorine and Organic Fluorine are given, taking into account known issues with Total Fluorine determination.
