Overview

This DIN SPEC 16589 "Product-to-Internet Communication - Pointer to Process" (P2P) describes the integration of Internet functionality into product codes. This is used for automated access to Internet pages that are assigned to an individual product or object. Optical data carriers or RFID can be used for this purpose. With the methodology described, product data can be read directly from the code (offline) but can lead online to information sources such as safety data sheets or trigger dialog processes (pointer to process) via the Internet. Applications can be found wherever a link to the Internet is to be established when the coded product data is scanned, for example for logistics and traceability tasks in industry and healthcare, but also for handling control systems. The DIN SPEC covers the structure of a code using the point-to-process data element in accordance with ISO/IEC 15418, part ASC data identifiers and the functional sequence from scanning to the establishment of the information dialog via the Internet. The application is not limited to packaged products, but can be used for direct marking of all relevant objects, such as machines and systems with type plates. The process is not only suitable for information management of specific product or object data, but also, for example, for automation solutions in maintenance management with dialogs for process assistance for personnel with automated documentation of events. The area of application includes object-to-machine or object-to-Internet communication and is therefore suitable for strategic projects such as the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0.
