DIN Standards Committee Technical Fundamentals
Classification of Latin typefaces
Abstract
This document specifies general principles for the description, differentiation, and classification of Latin typefaces in the field of typography. It defines terms for distinguishing characteristics and other relevant terminology. This document addresses the typefaces of the Latin writing system. For other writing systems, reference is made to ISO/IEC 9541-1. The classification applies to typefaces and typeface families, including their style variants, such as different weights, sizes, widths, and slopes. Typefaces consisting of symbols, ornaments, or pictograms are not within the scope of this document. Typeface design is subject to a wide range of formal, cultural, and individual influences. Consequently, there are typefaces that cannot be assigned, or cannot be assigned unambiguously, to only one of the classification groups described in this document.
