Precast lightweight concrete products with an open structure - design rules
Abstract
This document covers prefabricated elements of lightweight aggregate concrete (LAC) with open structure manufactured in a factory environment. It holds for elements having structural, load-bearing or no reinforcement. Lightweight aggregate concrete containing fibres for other than mechanical properties (steel, polymer or other fibres) and LAC with an aerated matrix is also covered. LAC elements are intended to be used in building construction and civil engineering works: a) for structural elements: - loadbearing wall elements (solid, hollow core or multilayer); - retaining wall elements (solid) with or without surcharge loading; - roof elements (solid, hollow core or multilayer); - floor elements (solid, hollow core or multilayer); - linear elements (beams or piers). b) for non-structural elements: - non-loadbearing wall elements (e.g. for partition walls); - cladding elements (without fixtures) intended to be used for external facades of buildings; - small box culverts used to form channels for the enclosure of services; - elements for noise barriers. NOTE In addition to their loadbearing and encasing function, elements can also be used to provide fire resistance, sound insulation and thermal insulation. Elements covered by this European Standard are only intended to be subjected to predominantly nondynamic actions, unless special measures are introduced in the relevant clauses of this European Standard. The term “reinforced” relates to reinforcement used for both structural and non-structural purposes. This document does not cover: - rules for the application of these elements in structures; - joints (except their strength); - fixtures; - finishes for external elements, such as tiling.
