Overview

DIN SPEC (pre-standard) 69874 has been prepared by the Tools and Clamping Devices Standards Committee at Working Committee NA 121-02-21 AA "Werkzeugdatenaustausch" ("Cutting tools data exchange"). A layer structure for tool design - better known as BMG layer structure - has been used as a template. Mainly, this concept has been - and still is - used and is still being used to illustrate cutting tools and their components in 2D. It is planned to use 3D graphics in the future. The definitions provided in this pre-standard will be published as version 3.0 and are downward compatible with version 2.1, which is generally used as an "industry standard". This pre-standard will be used for the design of tool layouts for the simulation and the documentation of cutting tool components and cutting tool assemblies. It can be used in conjunction with the DIN 4000 standard series "Tabular layouts of article characteristics" (for tools and tool adapters), the DIN 4003 standard series "Configuration of 3D models" and the ISO(/TS) 13399 standard series "Cutting tool data representation and exchange". The main purpose of this layer structure is the graphical layout of cutting tool components and cutting tool assemblies to be used within tool presetting, NC-programming and the simulation of processes. The current scope of the BMG layer structure has been expanded by a few elements to provide a universal applicability. This regulation applies to newly generated data. Already existing tool layouts are not included in the scope. In the case of changing already existing tool layouts it is at the manufacturer's discretion to apply this standard. The range of dimensions complies with the characteristics of conformance class (CC3) of the DIN 4000 standard series for cases in which these characteristics are based on one dimension. A level of detail going beyond this layout will be defined by the manufacturer and is tool specific. Since the simulation generated by the 3D stimulation systems includes the removal of material, it shall be possible to distinguish between cutting and non-cutting tool components. Furthermore, the rules for zero points and reference points for non-rotationally symmetrical tools (rotary tools) have been added to the data concept. The development of the DIN 4003 standard series "Configuration of 3D models" shall be taken into account, especially definitions and rules for source and assembly coordinate systems.
