Overview

This document specifies safety requirements for ballasts, excluding resistance types, for use on AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz, associated with fluorescent lamps with or without pre-heated cathodes operated with or without a starter or starting device and having rated powers, dimensions and characteristics as specified in IEC 60081 and IEC 60901. This document applies to complete ballasts and their individual components, such as reactors, transformers, and capacitors. The scope of this document is subject to the following limitations: ballasts for conventional lamp operation at power frequency are covered, while AC-powered electronic ballasts for high frequency operation are not covered. The standard differs from DIN EN 61347-2-8 (VDE 0712-38):2006-09, DIN EN 61347-2-8 Corrigendum 1 (VDE 0712-38 Corrigendum 1):2011-04 and DIN EN 61347-2-8 Corrigendum 2 (VDE 0712-38 Corrigendum 2):2013-06 as follows: a) introduction of dated references where appropriate; b) alignment of clause numbers with those of IEC 61347-1. Typical examples of applications covered by this document include ballasts consisting of a reactor that power fluorescent lamps in a luminaire during conventional operation at power frequency.
