Title (German)

Blitzschutz - Teil 1: Allgemeine Grundsätze (IEC 62305-1:2024); Deutsche Fassung EN IEC 62305-1:2024

Overview

This part of IEC 62305 provides general principles for the protection of structures against lightning, including their installations and contents, as well as persons. This document provides information on the hazards posed by lightning, the types of damage, the need for lightning protection, and possible protective measures. This document offers an overview of the entire series of standards and how they relate to one another. The general requirements listed here serve as the basis for applying the other parts of the series. It describes the potential damage caused by lightning strikes, the necessity and economic benefits of lightning protection, and the possible protective measures. In addition, the standard establishes basic criteria for the protection of structures. The following cases are outside the scope of this document: - railway systems; - vehicles, ships, aircraft; - underground high-pressure pipelines; - pipe, power and telecommunication lines placed outside the structure. The lightning current parameters specified in DIN EN IEC 62305-1 (VDE 0185-305-1) can also be applied to offshore installations as there is no evidence that conditions there differ significantly from those onshore. The standard differs from DIN EN 62305-1 (VDE 0185-305-1):2011-10 and DIN EN 62305-1 Corrigendum 1 (VDE 0185-305-1 Corrigendum 1):2012-03 as follows: a) EN 62305-1 has been adopted in its entirety; b) the standard has been editorially revised; c) Annex D refers to the IEC 62561 series of standards in order to establish a link to the relevant components of the lightning protection system in accordance with the IEC 62561 series of standards; d) risk management introduces the concept of damage types of public significance; e) the concept of the frequency of damage that can impair the availability of internal systems within the structure has been introduced; f) the surge currents caused by lightning in low-voltage networks and in telecommunications systems are specified in greater detail for the dimensioning of surge protective devices (SPDs). This standard forms the basis of the series of standards. It specifies general requirements to which the standards in this series make reference.
