DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE

Overview

This part of IEC 60079 contains the specific requirements for the design of electrical systems, selection, installation and the required initial inspection of electrical installations of Ex Equipment in, or associated with, explosive atmospheres including requirements for documentation and personnel competency. These requirements are in addition to the requirements for installations in non-hazardous areas. This document applies to all electrical Ex Equipment including fixed, transportable, portable and personal, and installations, permanent or temporary. No account is taken in this document of the toxic hazards that are associated with flammable gases, liquids and dusts in concentrations that are usually very much less than the lower flammable limit. In locations where personnel could be exposed to potentially toxic concentrations of flammable material, appropriate precautions are necessary. Such precautions are outside the scope of this document. This document does not apply to: - electrical installations in mines susceptible to firedamp; - inherently explosive situations and dust from explosives or pyrophoric substances (for example explosives manufacturing and processing); - rooms used for medical purposes; - electrical installations in areas where the hazard is due to flammable mist; and - installation of non-electrical Ex Equipment (unless being part of an equipment assembly according IEC TS 60079-46). The standard differs from DIN EN 60079-14 (VDE 0165-1):2014-10, DIN EN 60079-14 Corrigendum 1 (VDE 0165-1 Corrigendum 1):2016-06 and DIN EN 60079-14 Supplement 1 (VDE 0165-1 Supplement 1):2017-10 as follows: a) introduction of a new clause titled "Design, selection, and installation of equipment, and initial testing of electrical systems" as well as additional references to standards; b) introduction of the term "certificates"; c) introduction of the term "Ex equipment"; d) introduction of the term "Ex equipment certificates"; e) introduction of the term "cable"; f) revision of the clauses on zones and equipment protection levels, requirements applicable to all Ex equipment, electrical ratings, and the use of Ex components; g) revision of the clause on cathodically protected metal parts, cables (subject to thermal insulation), overhead lines, and electric heaters; h) requirements for manufacturers of RFID tags; i) additional information on installation; j) new requirements for electrical machines; k) new information on electrical trace heating systems; l) alignment of requirements for simple equipment with IEC 60079-11; m) new flowchart: Selection of cable entries; n) new normative Annex C: Pressure testing for cables - test methods; o) new informative Annexes I, J, K, M, O, and P. Annex O includes the test tables for initial testing from IEC 60079-17; p) revision of other clauses. Typical examples of application of this document include, among others: design, selection, and installation of equipment; - initial testing of electrical installations; - monitoring conditions for exceptional circumstances; - documentation; - pressure test procedures for cables; - risk assessment; - verification of intrinsic safety; - determination of the characteristic values of cables.
