Overview
The standards of the DIN EN 60811 series (VDE 0473-811) specify the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and for cable materials. The non-metallic materials used in cables and wires are typically employed for insulation, sheathing, embedding, filling, or bandaging within the cable. The test methods used for this purpose are recognized as simple and fundamental. They have been developed and used over many years, primarily for all power cables and power lines. They are also recognized and used for other cables, in particular for optical fiber cables, communication cables, and control cables, including marine cables and cables for offshore applications. This Part 201 of DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) gives the methods for measuring the insulation thicknesses, which apply to the most common types of insulating compounds (crosslinked, PVC, PE, PP, etcetera). In accordance with its scope, there are no restrictions on the application of this document. The standard differs from DIN EN 60811-201 (VDE 0473-811-201):2018-05 as follows: a) subclause 4.2, Measuring instruments, has been revised; b) the German version has been updated in Annex ZA to reflect the current standard text. Typical examples of application for this document include methods for measuring the wall thicknesses of insulating sheaths, which are applicable to the most common types of insulating composites (cross-linked, PVC, PE, PP, and so on).
