Overview

The standards in the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) series specify the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and for cable materials. The non-metallic materials used in cables and wires are usually used for insulating, sheathing, embedding, filling, or bandaging the interior of the cable. The test methods used for this purpose are recognized as simple and fundamental. They have been developed and used for many years, mainly for all power cables and high-voltage lines. They are also recognized and used for other cables, in particular for fiber optic cables, communication cables, and control cables, including marine cables and cables for offshore applications. This part of the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) standard describes the procedure for testing the shrinkage of sheaths. In accordance with the scope of application, there are no restrictions on the application of the standard. The standard differs from DIN EN 60811-503 (VDE 0473-811-503):2012-12 as follows: a) 4.3, Sampling, the sampling procedure has been revised; b) 4.4, Preparation of the sample, the requirements for preparing the sample have been supplemented; c) 4.5, Test method, the clause has been revised; d) the German version has been adapted to the current standard text in Annex ZA. Typical examples of application for the document are the procedures for shrinkage testing of sheaths.
