Overview
This part of the IEC 60068 series of standards contains a description of the test methods for testing devices or components that are operated, transported, or stored at varying temperatures. The result should show that the test specimens maintain their functionality during and after exposure to the test environment. DIN EN IEC 60068-2-14 (VDE 0468-2-14) focuses on assessing suitability for the corresponding application in order to avoid impairment in the form of electrical, mechanical, or other physical changes, or a significant reduction in performance under the influence of alternating temperatures. Specifically appropriate degrees of severity shall be assigned as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature changes as well as the rates of change. Among other things, the material and design of the test specimen also play a role in terms of thermal conductivity. DIN EN IEC 60068-2-14 (VDE 0468-2-14) provides explanations in this regard and specifies different test procedures (Na, Nb, Nc). Effects directly related to fire or explosions are the responsibility of another technical committee. Parts -2-1 and -2-2 shall be applied for test specimens that are primarily used at high or low temperatures. The standard differs from DIN EN 60068-2-14 (VDE 0468-2-14):2010-04 as follow: a) the figures have been updated for clarification purposes; b) updating of the test specimen temperature(s) and severity levels as well as the tolerances for temperature change tests; c) revision of the standardized requirements for test reports for tests Na and Nb. As a test method for electrotechnical products in general, the standard DIN EN IEC 60068-2-14 (VDE 0468-2-14) covers a wide range of test situations; in this respect, there are no typical application examples for this generally applicable standard.
