Electrical apparatus for the detection of flammable gases in household premises - Part 1: Test methods and performance requirements; German version EN 50194-1:2023

Title (German)

Elektrische Geräte für die Detektion von brennbaren Gasen in Wohnhäusern - Teil 1: Prüfverfahren und Anforderungen an das Betriebsverhalten; Deutsche Fassung EN 50194-1:2023

Overview

This document defines test methods and performance requirements for all electric gas detectors used in residential areas and households to detect gases by measuring one or more alarm thresholds. It is intended for manufacturers of such devices and for testing laboratories that validate the devices. This document specifies general requirements for the design, test methods, and operational performance of electrically powered devices for measuring combustible gases that are intended for continuous operation in residential buildings, households, and, more generally, in premises for commercial and small business use when installed in a fixed location. The apparatus can be mains or battery powered. Additional requirements for apparatus to be used in recreational vehicles and similar premises are specified in EN 50194-2. Apparatus complying with this document is not considered suitable for installation in potentially explosive atmospheres, in which case the EN 60079 series applies This document does not apply to any of the following: - apparatus intended for the detection of dusts or mists in air; - scientific or laboratory-based apparatus used only for analysis or measurement; - apparatus used exclusively for process measurement purposes; - apparatus for medical purposes; - apparatus used for breath alcohol measurement; - apparatus intended for the direct measurement of automotive exhaust gases; - apparatus intended for use in industrial environments. The standard differs from DIN EN 50194-1 (VDE 0400-30-1):2009-08 as follows: a) the term "households" is used instead of "residential buildings" to cover additional applications, such as shops, offices, hotel rooms, living areas, and generally areas where household appliances (according to IEC/EN 60335-1) are located; b) this document introduces a new selection of combustible gases to be detected. In the areas covered by this document, combustible refrigerant gases, R-717 (ammonia) in the LEL range, and hydrogen in fuel cell applications may also be present and shall be taken into account accordingly; c) the structure of the document has been completely revised to harmonize this version with the related standard EN 50291-1:2018 and with other new standards for digital technologies and software technologies. Typical examples of application are type testing and the specification of design requirements.
