Radiation protection instrumentation - Spectroscopy-based alarming personal radiation detectors (SPRD) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (IEC 62618:2022); German version EN IEC 62618:2024

Overview

This standard applies to Spectroscopy-based alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD) which represent a new instrument category between alarming Personal Radiation Devices (PRD) and Radionuclide Identification Devices (RID). SPRDs are advanced PRDs that can be worn on a belt or in a pocket to alert the wearer of the presence of a radiation source. In addition to the features of conventional PRDs, SPRDs provide rapid simultaneous search and identification capability to locate and identify radiation sources. The alarm can distinguish between natural, medical and industrial radioactive substances and fissile nuclear material. The object of this standard is to establish performance requirements, provide examples of acceptable test methods and to specify general characteristics, general test conditions, radiological, environmental, mechanical and electromagnetic characteristics that are used to determine if an instrument meets the requirements of this standard. SPRDs are not intended for accurate measurement of personal or ambient dose equivalent (rate). The standard is also not applicable for testing the performance of radiation protection measuring instruments, which are covered in IEC 61526 or IEC 60846-1. The standard differs from DIN EN 62618 (VDE 0493-3-8):2017-08 as follows: a) consistency with the new editions of the IEC standards for detecting illegally transported radioactive material (see introduction); b) ntroduction of a uniform functional test for all environmental, electromagnetic, and mechanical stresses with reference to IEC 62706; c) inclusion of a requirement regarding the coefficient of variation for each display range; d) inclusion of additional information regarding climatic stresses. The results of tests performed provide information to end-users and manufacturers on instrument capability for reliable detection, localization and identification of radiation sources.
