Overview
This document specifies the basic test procedures, conditions and methods for establishing the main performance parameters and the main operational characteristics of electric arc furnaces (EAF) and ladle furnaces (LF) with rated power level above 500 kVA. The document is applicable for the commissioning, verification of design improvements or for energy related tasks with respect to energy use or energy efficiency, establishing of an energy baseline, and labelling. Some concepts from this document can directly be used as key performance indicators. The document includes the concept and material on energy efficiency presented in DIN EN 60398 (VDE 0721-50):2016-02 dealing with the electrical and processing parts of the equipment as well as the overall performance, and is to be applied in conjunction with that document. Measurements and tests that serve exclusively to verify the safety requirements of equipment for direct arc furnaces are outside the scope of this document and are covered by DIN EN IEC 60519-1 (VDE 0721-1):2020-12, DIN EN IEC 60519-4 (VDE 0721-4): 2022-07, and ISO 13578. Test methods for submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are covered in DIN EN 60683 (VDE 0721-1022):2012-08 (currently under revision). Direct arc furnaces (EAF-AC and EAF-DC) are plants for melting steel scrap, directly reduced iron, hot briquetted directly reduced iron, or pig iron. Ladle furnaces (LF), on the other hand, are mainly used to achieve the required quality and to finally adjust the temperature of the molten steel before it is transferred to casting plants or vacuum treatment plants. This document assumes that the plants or equipment are only operated and maintained by trained or instructed personnel.
