Radiation protection instrumentation - Spectroscopy-based alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (IEC 62618:2013); German version EN 62618:2016

Overview

This standard applies to Spectroscopy-based alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD) which represent a new instrument category between alarming Personal Radiation Devices (PRD) and Radionuclide Identification Devices (RID). SPRDs are advanced PRDs that can be worn on a belt or in a pocket to alert the wearer of the presence of a radiation source. They are not intended for accurate measurement of personal or ambient dose equivalent (rate). In addition to the features of conventional PRDs, SPRDs provide rapid simultaneous search and identification capability to locate and identify radiation sources. The alarm can distinguish between natural, medical and industrial radioactive substances and fissile nuclear material. The object of this standard is to establish performance requirements, provide examples of acceptable test methods and to specify general characteristics, general test conditions, radiological, environmental, mechanical and electromagnetic characteristics that are used to determine if an instrument meets the requirements of this standard. The results of tests performed provide information to end-users and manufacturers on instrument capability for reliable detection, localization and identification of radiation sources. For measuring arrangements and devices for monitoring materials for radioactive components, the following have been published by GK 967.2: - DIN EN 62022 (VDE 0493-3-1):2008-01, "Installed monitors for the control and detection of gamma radiations contained in recyclable or non-recyclable materials transported by vehicles (IEC 62022:2004, modified); German version EN 62022:2007"; - DIN EN 62244 (VDE 0493-3-2): 2012-02, "Radiation protection instrumentation - Installed radiation portal monitors (RPMs) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive and nuclear materials (IEC 62244:2006, modified); German version EN 62244:2011"; - DIN EN 62327 (VDE 0493-3-3):2012-02, "Radiation protection instrumentation - Hand-held instruments for the detection and identification of radionuclides and for the estimation of ambient dose equivalent rate from photon radiation (IEC 62327: 2006, modified); German version EN 62327:2011"; - DIN IEC 62401 (VDE 0493-3-4):2009-01, "Radiation protection instrumentation - Alarming personal radiation devices (PRDs) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (IEC 62401:2007)"; - DIN IEC 62484 (VDE 0493-3-5):2014-04, " Radiation protection instrumentation - Spectrometric radiation portal monitors (SRPMs) used for the detection and identification of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (IEC 62484: 2010)"; - DIN IEC 62533 (VDE 0493-3-6):2013-04, "Radiation protection instrumentation - Highly sensitive hand-held instruments for photon detection of radioactive material (IEC 62533:2010)"; - DIN IEC 62534 (VDE 0493-3-7):2013-04, "Radiation protection instrumentation - Highly sensitive hand-held instruments for neutron detection of radioactive material (IEC 62534:2010)" - DIN EN 62618 (VDE 0493-3-8):2017-.., "Radiation protection instrumentation - Spectroscopy-based alarming Personal Radiation Detectors (SPRD) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material" (IEC 62618:2013); German version EN 62618:2016; - DIN EN 62694 (VDE 0493-3-10):2017-.., "Radiation protection instrumentation - Backpack-type radiation detector (BRD) for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive material (IEC 62694:2014); German version EN 62694:2016". Information on the use of these devices can be found in DIN ISO 22188:2008-03, "Monitoring for inadvertent movement and illicit trafficking of radioactive material (ISO 22188:2004)".
