Overview

This part of IEC 61966 is applicable to the encoding and communication of YCC colours used in video systems and similar applications by defining encoding transformations for use in defined reference capturing conditions. If actual conditions differ from the reference conditions, additional rendering transformations may be required. Such additional rendering transformations are beyond the scope of this standard. After the standardization of IEC 61966-2-1 Amendment 1, sYCC color coding was used to record, store and print the extended color gamut for still image applications. Users received pleasant benefits from this replacement and reproduction of color images with wider color gamut. Recently, various types of displays capable of reproducing a wider color gamut than that of conventional cathode ray tube displays have emerged. Most of the current video content reproduced on conventional displays is prepared for the sRGB color gamut. Users of wide gamut displays could get the benefits of wide gamut color images by using video color coding that supports a wider color gamut. This standard defines a "YCC color space for extended color gamut video applications." It is based on the current implementation of YCC color coding used in the video industry (namely ITU-R BT.709-5), which extends its definition to a wider color gamut of the color space. The responsible committee is DKE/K 742 "Audio-, Video- und Multimediasysteme, -geräte und -komponenten" ("Audio, video and multimedia systems, equipment and components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
