DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE

Overview

When designing an electrotechnical product, the risk of fire as well as the potential hazards associated with fires shall be taken into account and minimized as far as possible by dimensioning components, designing the circuitry and the selection of materials. The basic principle is to prevent any ignition or, if necessary, to contain the spread of fire. Part -1-11 of the IEC 60695 series provides guidance for assessing the fire hazard of electrical products and for the resulting development of tests. A hazard-based procedure is shown for determining appropriate fire tests and requirements for product characteristics. Fire events or scenarios that are to be recognized in connection with the respective product are described and, on this basis, measurable fire characteristics of the product are evaluated and suitable requirements are specified. This standard has the status of a basic safety standard according to IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. It is addressed to technical committees for implementation in standards. Application-specific integration is then the responsibility of the respective technical committee. This standard differs from DIN EN 60695-1-11 (VDE 0471-1-11):2011-10 as follows: references and terms updated, a description of product areas and application situations (Flowchart 2) added, and bibliographic references added. The responsible committee is DKE/K 133 "Prüfverfahren und Beurteilung der Brandgefahr von elektronischen Produkten und Isolierstoffen" ("Fire hazard testing of electronic products and insulating material") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
