Overview

The International Standard for determination of the magnetic properties of magnetically hard materials IEC 60404-5 Ed. 2.0 "Magnetic materials - Part 5: Permanent magnet (magnetically hard) materials - Methods of measurement of magnetic properties " was first published in October 1993 and supplemented in 2007. In the meantime, new applications of sintered NdFeB magnets, whose HcJ value exceeds 2 MA/m, have been developed and are used in hybrid-electric and pure electric vehicles. Therefore, IEC/TC 68 decided at its meeting in Ghent in 2011 to revise the corresponding International Standard IEC 60404-5. For measurement of the coercivity of magnetic polarization HCJ at values higher than 2 MA/m and for the measurement of magnetic properties at higher temperatures, such methods may be taken into consideration as described in the non-standard Technical Reports IEC/TR 61807 Ed. 1.0 and IEC/TR 62331 Ed. 1.0. The original recommended ambient temperature was (23 ± 5) °C. However, for such permanent magnetically hard materials such as NdFeB and hard ferrites, which have high temperature coefficients, it is strongly recommended that the ambient temperature be controlled to within ±1 °C. This recommendation was already included in Supplement 1 of IEC 60404-5 Ed. 2.0. This Part 5 of the IEC 60404 series of International Standards defines methods for measurement of the magnetic flux density, magnetic polarization and the magnetic field strength and also to determine the demagnetization curve and recoil line of permanent magnet materials, such as those specified in lEC 60404-8-1, the properties of which are presumed homogeneous throughout their volume. The performance of a magnetic system is not only dependent on the properties of the permanent magnet material but also on the dimensions of the system, the air-gap and other elements of the magnetic circuit. The methods described in this standard refer to the measurement of the magnetic properties in a closed magnetic circuit emulating a ring.
