Technical Report

Overview

This first edition of a PAS for the performance of LED modules for general lighting use recognizes the need for corresponding tests for this new light source, which is sometimes called "solid state lighting" (SSL). The publication is closely related to the simultaneously developed performance standards (or PAS) for lamps in general and for LED lamps. Due to the LED characteristics, modifications in the PAS for LED modules will influence the lamp standards and vice versa. For this reason, close collaboration of experts for both products took place during the development of the current PAS. The specifications in the PAS reflect the technical knowledge of the experts in the fields of the semiconductor (LED chip) industry and traditional electrical light sources. The standard covers three types of LED modules: with installed control gear, with a separate supply unit, which is, however, connected to the control unit ("semi-integrated") and with completely external control gear. The PAS specifies the requirements for the performance of LED modules, together with the test methods and conditions necessary to show compliance with this PAS. The subcommittee responsible for the PAS is UK 521.1 "Elektrische Lampen" ("Electrical lamps") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
