Ultrasonics - Intraluminal short pressure pulse therapy sources - Characteristics of fields
Abstract
Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) refers to an interventional procedure to modify calcified plaque in diseased arteries with the application of ultrasonic short pressure pulses. Such devices vary in design with respect to the energy source used to generate the acoustic shock waves (i.e. Electrohydraulic, Laser, Photoacoustic/Optohydraulic). While non-focusing short pressure pulses and extracorporeal lithotripsy field characteristics are defined from IEC 63045:2020 and IEC 61846:2025 respectively, invasive, intravascular, and laser-based lithotripsy devices and short pressure pulses are out of scope for those documents. This standard IEC 63612 serves to enable the standardization of characterizing acoustic fields of intraluminal ultrasonic short pressure pulse devices. Ultrasonic short pressure pulses have been referred to in bibliography as ‘shock waves.´ This document uses the more precise terminology of ultrasonic short pressure pulses and specifies methods of measuring and characterizing the ultrasonic short pressure pulses generated by intraluminal short pressure pulse devices.
