The 28th World Climate Change Conference, COP28, will take place in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023. Representatives of nearly 200 nations will come together to agree on ways to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to the effects of climate change, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This year, DIN will be at the COP for the first time as an official observer organization with its own delegation.

International standards for the green transformation

A global challenge like climate change requires global solutions. Trustworthy, internationally accepted standards accelerate the achieving of global climate targets and thus support the green transformation.  This is because standards create trust in new climate-friendly technologies when it comes to building a green and sustainable economy. They help to open up new markets and make investments more secure - for companies and governments alike.

Close cooperation is needed

To make even greater use of this tool for climate protection in the future, all relevant stakeholders must work closely together. At COP28, DIN will discuss the role of standardization in climate protection and climate adaption with representatives from politics, business, science and civil society, and hopes to deepen existing partnerships and establish new contacts.

To this end, DIN will be organizing local events on various topics together with various partners. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend our events on site or via livestream. We look forward to seeing you there!

5.12.2023 – Hydrogen Afternoon at the ISO Pavilion Show

Hydrogen Afternoon at the ISO Pavilion

Date: 5.12.2023, 11:00-14:30 CET (14:00-17:30 GST)

Location: ISO Pavilion

Organizers: DIN / UNIDO / Hydrogen Europe

Topic: The expansion of renewable energy sources and energy carriers worldwide requires a coordinated approach to the standardization of green technology solutions, especially for hydrogen. Standards are an important instrument for guiding technological development and ensuring that products and technologies comply with safety, environmental and social requirements, thereby creating trust. A coordinated approach is key to the emergence of new global markets and cross-border flows of decarbonized energy solutions such as hydrogen and hydrogen carriers. In this way, fragmentation can be avoided, non-tariff trade barriers removed and a level playing field created. The panel discussion will cover the current status of this development - particularly with regard to the partnership between industrialized and developing countries. Christoph Winterhalter, DIN CEO and ISO Vice President of Policy, will give a presentation.

6.12.2023 – From National Adaptation Plans to Global Climate Action Show

From National Adaptation Plans to Global Climate Action

Date: 6.12.2023, 08:30-09:30 CET (11:30-12:30 GST)

Location: ISO-Pavilion

Organizers: DIN / SAC

Topic: International standards are an important instrument for supporting adaptation to climate change at all levels. However, the need to adapt to climate change can vary greatly depending on the sector and location. Many countries have already drawn up national adaptation plans (NAPs), the implementation of which can be supported by standardization. This joint event organized by DIN and the Chinese standardization organization SAC will discuss which climate scenarios society will need to be prepared for in 20, 30 or 50 years' time. The focus will also be on how small and medium-sized enterprises and local companies can be helped to make the best possible use of existing international standards for adapting to climate change. The event will be moderated by Christoph Winterhalter, DIN CEO and ISO Vice President Policy.

6.12.2023 – Achieving Comparability of Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) using International Standards Show

Achieving Comparability of Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) using International Standards

Date: 6.12.2023, 6:45-7:45 CET (09:45-10:45 GST)

Location: ISO-Pavilion

Organizer: DIN

Topic: To achieve the global goal of net zero emissions, all industrial supply chains must be decarbonized. This can be done by calculating the carbon footprint of the product (PCF) for goods and services. Today, there are a number of standards for measuring the PCF - at international level, this is ISO 14067. However, product category rules (PCR), which form the basis for the PCF calculations, are usually developed by suppliers from different sectors and regions and differ accordingly. This DIN event will discuss how the measurement and reporting of PCFs across different products and sectors can be made accurate, reliable and comparable. The event will be moderated by Christoph Winterhalter, DIN CEO and ISO Vice President Policy.

Location: EU-Pavilion

Organizers: DG ENV, EIB, INTPA, CLIMA

Topic: Nature underpins our collective survival and prosperity. Nature-based solutions (NbS) help to protect us from climate change impacts. Prioritising nature-based solutions is often a cost-effective and impactful pathway for reducing climate vulnerabilities and improving livelihoods. To deploy NbS at scale, we need a package of actions. This event brings together high-level representatives from the science community, governments, cities, financial institutions and the private sector. It includes a keynote speech followed by a moderated panel discussion and questions from the audience. The panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges in devising policies and investments that can support the deployment of NbS to address climate change, enhance biodiversity and health. Christoph Winterhalter, CEO DIN and ISO Vice President for Policy, will participate in the discussion.

10.12.2023 – Accelerating the Financing of the Circular Economy in Climate and Biodiversity Strategies  Show

Accelerating the Financing of the Circular Economy in Climate and Biodiversity Strategies

Date: 10.12.2023, 08:00-09:00 CET (11:00-12:00 GST)

Location: EU-Pavillion

Organizers: European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), DG ENV, DG CLIMA (European Commission) and the Coordination Group members of the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform

Topic: The circular economy offers solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss at the source. It's time to mobilise financing to accelerate the circular economy. While sustainable tools like green bonds and impact investing can support circularity, unlocking the circular economy's financing potential remains a challenge. Collaboration between the circular community, policy-makers and financial institutions is vital for progress in financing the circular transition, especially as perceptions of risks persist. This event addresses policy experts, financial actors and civil society and includes a keynote speech followed by a moderated panel discussion and questions from the audience. Christoph Winterhalter, CEO DIN and ISO Vice President for Policy, will participate in the discussion.
