Thermal analysis (TA) – Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) – Part 1: General Principles
Abstract
This document defines general principles for applications of Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) on solids and liquids. Differential thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry can be used to record all physical or chemical processes that are associated with a measurable thermal effect. Both characteristic temperatures and caloric information are obtained. DTA can be used to determine transformation and reaction temperatures, while DSC can additionally be used to access heats of transformation, heats of reaction, purity of eutectic systems, and specific heat capacities. Further knowledge can be obtained by measurements in different atmospheres (gas type and pressure) and under intrinsic vapor pressure. DSC can be used to perform measurements to determine reaction kinetics (by varying the heating rate, among other things).
