Fault tree analysis (FTA) (IEC 56/1778/CD:2018); Text in German and English

Abstract

This International Standard describes fault tree analysis and provides guidance on its application by practitioners as follows: - definition of basic principles; - explaining the relationships of FTA to other reliability modelling techniques; - identification of appropriate assumptions, events and failure modes; - identification and description and mathematical meaning of commonly used symbols; - description of the steps involved in performing the FTA; - description of the use of FT for qualitative analysis; - description of the use of FT for quantitative analysis; - requirements, explanations and limitations of the associated mathematical modelling; - procedures for calculating dependability measures (unavailability, failure frequency and unreliability) for different type of systems simple or large, with constant or time dependent probabilities or with non-repaired or repaired faults; - the relationships with reliability block diagram analysis (see IEC 61078) and Markov techniques (see IEC 61165); - extension of fault trees (non-coherent FTs and dynamic FTs); - importance factors; - numerical examples.
