Overview

This Supplement provides calculation assistance for assessment of the risk of damage in accordance with DIN EN IEC 62305-2 (VDE 0185-305-2) for the protection of both structures and persons (DIN EN IEC 62305-3 (VDE 0185-305-3)) and for electrical and electronic systems within structures (DIN EN IEC 62305-4 (VDE 0185-305-4)). There are no restrictions on the application of this document. However, it should be noted that there is a digital supplement to this Supplement which contains two EXCEL files, each containing a calculation tool with and without pre-entered parameter values. The standard differs from DIN EN 62305-2 Supplement 2 (VDE 0185-305-2 Supplement 2):2013-02 as follows: a) comprehensive revision of the calculation assistance in accordance with DIN EN IEC 62305-2 (VDE 0185-305-2):2026-02; b) calculation of a single damage risk that combines loss of life and physical damage to the structure; c) introduction of a concept for calculating the damage frequency of internal systems in structures; d) introduction of an annual ground lightning strike point density in place of the annual ground lightning density; e) introduction of the concept of thunderstorm warning systems. This document and the accompanying calculation assistance may be used by anyone who wishes to assess the risk of damage caused by lightning strikes.
